Construction Symbolism

'Construction Symbolism' is a visual investigation involving mark-making, hidden symbols and languages that reside in the thin space above the ground but beneath our feet.

Utilizing Adobe Illustrator, images of spray painted construction markers across Albuquerque, New Mexico were imported and scanned using Retype, a feature which converts static text into live editable text boxes.

Using this feature I scanned construction symbols to see how the feature would react to non-letter forms. Each conversion was only limited to use the fonts: Windings, Webdings, and Wild Wild West.

I'm thinking about the wild west, I'm thinking about the american cowboy, I'm thinking about visual signifiers and clues, I'm thinking about the infrastructure beneath our feet, I'm thinking about digital graffiti, I'm thinking about icons and symbols that carry meaning but only because we subscribe meaning to it, I'm thinking about how these symbols are presented in such a public way yet how many people (including myself) are unaware of their meaning...
